Antique Edwardian Era MIZPAH Ring in 18K
This is a sentimental piece of jewelry engraved with the Hebrew word Mizpah, which means watchtower. Its significance is connected to the biblical passage, “The Lord watch between me and thee, when we are absent one from another.” The MIZPAH ring was traditionally given as a token of love, friendship, or remembrance between two people separated by distance or war. It was popular in Victorian England during the mid- to late 19th century and surged again in popularity during World War 1, when soldiers left home for the front lines.
This particular example has the word engraved on the flat oblong head of a signet style ring. The deep flora and fauna chasing on the shoulders add texture and decorative interest to the ring.
The ring is in excellent antique condition. Gently cleaned and ready to wear. The box pictured is not included with the purchase.
◆Materials: 18k Yellow Gold
◆Measurements: All approximate – center pearl 2.8mm, ends 2mm; diamonds 1.6mm
◆Weight: 3.7g
◆Size: US 6.25-6.5 (sizable with care to avoid hallmarks)
◆Hallmarks: Crown 18 for purity guarantee of 18k gold; Birmingham Assay symbol, anchor; date letter ‘S’ for the year 1917-1918; additional ‘Crown 18’ stamp under the head of the ring; personal inscription, ‘From Nell & Arthur Feb 3 1919’
Antique and vintage jewelry are sold as is. They are pre-owned and will bear signs of wear commensurate with their age, which may or may not have been stated in the product description. Metal surfaces could have light marks or scratches, and rings may be out of round. The stones, too, could have surface wear or sometimes chips. Evidence of repair could also present itself as imperfections, due to the general techniques and instruments available at the time.
