Antique Georgian Foiled Back Paste Pendant

$1,650.00

A fine example of a paste pendant dating to the Georgian era, ca.1800s, this is a rare surviving component that was likely part of a larger, elaborate necklace. The intensely saturated colors of this “imperial topaz” chandelier pendant are amplified by the mirror-like effect of the foiled back. The movements of the individual pendants dance to their own rhythm and are enchanting to observe. This entire piece would have been handcrafted. The large 14k bale, is a new addition, handmade in the style of Georgian jewelry.

In excellent antique condition. Gently cleaned and ready to wear. Box for display only and not included in the purchase.

Paste is a fascinating category of fine jewelry. It became popular during the early part of the 19th century, coveted by women in European Courts and within high society. It is made from a special type of glass, hand cut, and polished with a particular material that could make the colored glass luminous and glisten like the genuine gemstones they were meant to emulate. Various metal oxides would transform the glass into colored stones. Crafting Paste jewelry was a laborious process that required highly skilled artisans.
