Antique Victorian Watchchain Necklace or Bracelet 14k Fancy Links

$1,125.00

Antique Victorian watchchain with slender bar links and delicate oval links in unusual yellow gold with a hint of subtle green tone. The filigree bar links have an openwork design and alternate with oval links in between. The oval links allow the bar links to move smoothly. This pretty handcrafted chain has an airy look and a tactile quality to it. It can be worn as a bracelet if your wrist is medium to large. The bolt ring clasp is stamped ‘14k’ and is original to the chain.

During the 19th century, a watchchain was a wardrobe staple in men’s attire, connecting a pocket watch tucked inside a pocket of a waistcoat or vest to one of its buttons. These chains were available in different gold purities, but 9ct was the most common. The style of the links also varied, from very simple curb links to much more elaborate ‘fancy’ links. With the evolution of fashion, watch chains eventually became obsolete for men, but women began wearing them as necklaces, often layered with several chains of different lengths and showcasing pendants, charms, and lockets as personal expressions of style.

In excellent antique condition. Gently cleaned and ready to wear.  Presentation box for display only and not included in the ring purchase.
