This is a magnificent antique celestial pendant from the Victorian era, c.1880. The finest gems were chosen for this crescent -- the beautifully faceted antique Cushion Cut rubies and Old Mine Cut diamonds alternate, with the small Rose diamonds adding to the sparkle. Our treasure is designed to be worn in the reverse of the letter ‘c,’ as a waxing crescent shape, which is the first visible phase after a new moon. We see many crescent jewels in the jewelry market, fixed to be worn in the shape of the letter ‘c,’ or the waning crescent. Our crescent is distinctive not only for its beauty but for its suggestion of new beginnings.
The crescent as a jewelry motif dates to antiquity. In ancient Greek mythology, Selene is the goddess of the moon, renowned for her beauty and depicted wearing a crescent moon while driving a silver chariot across the night sky.
